garybeacom'sAPOLOGY

"This book contains the most important message of our times - in my opinion, that is. If a more pressing issue occurred to me, I can assure you that I would have made it my cause celebre. The book is partly a commentary on the political status quo. Many are not surprised that a figure skater, a somewhat defining aspect of whose competitive career has been political strife, would demonstrate the same degree of protestation in his everyday life.

"Did you ever wonder what could possibly motivate me to stop filing tax returns? If you haven't read this book or spoken to me directly, then you haven't heard my side of the story. You have only heard their side of the story. The Victoria Times-Colonist article available to view via this site is quite a bit better than most, but even this falls short of the whole story. Since income taxes affect us all, this is truly general interest reading. The objective of this book is only partly to vindicate myself. More importantly, it is to spread the message of freedom that our heads of state proudly talk about but don't at all embrace. This book defines freedom and shows the extent to which we have been going in the opposite direction. It explains, for example, why tril by jury has been referred to as "the palladium of liberty", and how modern jury trials are a complete bastardization of the original ideal.

"The book also relates my experiences of prison life and of my dealings with dishonourable lawyers and judges. You will come away with a very clear picture of why I have come to mistrust and disrespect modern governments and to call their legitimacy into question.

"Every reader is free to make a judgment as to whether I am the sort of individual who thrives on uncovering something to complain about, or if, on the other hand, the arguments I make in the writing are sound - not that I urge anyone to read the book to glean the idiosyncracies of one humble man in the midst of billions. Idolatry is a no-no, after all.

"The book is a multifaceted adventure along the roadway of life. If there is one thing I learned in jail, it is from other inmates who rendered my ear permanently warped. I have listened to plenty of stories. I can't stand the noise of people griping about the government - particularly when no solution is proffered. Although the issues are solemn, to be sure, we have oodles to be glad about on planet Earth. A good mood gives balance to a good brood!

"Having said that (to quote a favourite idiom of Chris Dean), it is more difficult to maintain one's (to use a favourite pronoun of Toller Cranston) equilibrium with something on one's chest. Since the bulk of this book was written in the hoosegow, where susceptibility to indignation is upped a notch or two, I couldn't lay claim to the most tolerant of dispositions. Why it was christened Apology is for the reader to ascertain. The shortest answer to that question goes on for a few hundred pages, bound only by two cover photos of some guy wearing ice skates, one taken in Sun Valley Idaho and the other in Victoria, British Columbia.

"Permit me to indulge in a little hucksterism, as I believe I still have a healthy balance of credibility and respect in my account. If you buy my book, you will be getting value for value. I didn't just scribble down a bunch of gibberish to bamboozle Joe Six-Pack into reaching for his wallet. As an added bonus, you will be paving another inch of the way for Stella Diane Beacom and Garrison Dean Beacom to enjoy lives of security and opportunity." - Gary Beacom
