1980: Canadian Figure Skating Championships, long program
This pivotal moment in my amateur career was as painful to watch as it was to skate!
I had beaten Brian Pockar at a pre-Olympic event in Lake Placid in September where I had skated flawlessly, but unfortunately I had to chalk Canadians up as a learning experience about resting on one's laurels in an Olympic year where Canada was entitled to only one man on the team. I apparently thought I had it sewn up before it was over, sitting in first place going into the long program.
Or
maybe I could just blame it on the Aerosmith concert the week before that was so
loud it threw off my equilibrium...
